The TYL-FJPPL annual call for applications to fund staff exchanges on joint activities

Each year, funding applications to support staff exchanges between French and Japanese teams of scientists wishing to pursue research together can be submitted to the TYL-FJPPL.

Collaborative activities supported by the TYL-FJPPL should be led jointly by a French and a Japanese staff scientist of the CNRS, CEA, KEK or one of the participating universities, and should be within the main areas of research pursued by IN2P3, IRFU and KEK. Both emerging activities and new initiatives within existing projects can be supported. Participation of young staff and students is encouraged, both through secondment periods in the partner team and co-supervised theses. Projects can be resubmitted at most three times. When re-submitted, a report on the activities in the elapsed year must be provided. If two teams wish to continue their collaboration beyond four years, they should submit a new proposal, with a new title and an evolution in the content, as well as new leaders.

Please be aware that funding from the TYL-FJPPL is only intended to support the additional cost of cooperating with the partner team in France / Japan, not the basic needs of the research program. The provided funds can be used for mutual visits and the organization of joint workshops, possibly also to cover transport of equipment needed to pursue joint activities, but not to buy equipment or consumables, or for maintenance of repairs. The requested amounts should be justified in terms of reasonable (and, depending on the project, balanced) levels of exchange between the two teams towards achieving their goals.

The indicative timeline is as follows:
- deadline for submitting applications and yearly reports in February
- independent evaluation by French and Japanese reviewers in March and April
- exchange of opinions on each project during the Steering Committee meeting, usually in May, followed by funding decisions
- allocation of French and Japanese funds in June
The period of reference for the activities in the yearly report and application coincides with the Japanese fiscal year: April 1 to March 31.

Evaluation criteria have been agreed by the Steering Committee:

  • Scientific and technical quality of the foreseen research program. In case of re-application, progress made in the elapsed year, including publications, reports, communication to conferences,...
  • Quality of the collaboration in terms of scientific and technical exchanges between the French and Japanese partners, task definition and assignments, complementarity, joint publications and reports, joint training of junior staff and students,...
  • Expected impact of the TYL-FJPPL framework for the described activity. Justification for the funds requested to support the proposed exchanges between French and Japanese teams.

The 2017 call for applications is now closed.
